Local Attractions

Days Out

  • St. Savinien

    Beautiful Waterside Town

Saint-Savinien is in the Charente-Maritime department between Rochefort (to the north-west) and Saintes (to the south-east).

It is one of the most attractive towns in the region, principally because of its setting on a raised promontory on the banks of the Charente river - this is most unusual in this region of Charente-Maritime which is usually very flat.

One water based attraction in this part of Saint-Savinen that is very popular, especially with children between about 9 and 13 years old, is the Port Miniature of Saint-Savinien. A 'fleet' of small boats has been established on a small lake in the style of classic ships such as paddle steamers, ferries and lifeboats. Children can operate these boats themselves (although children less than 9 years old need to be accompanied by adults), and a great time is had by all!

  • La Rochelle

One of the Most Attractive Port Towns

La Rochelle is on the western coast of France, in the Charente-Maritime department.

La Rochelle is certainly among the most attractive port towns of France, and is a very pleasant place to visit and to pass a few days. Because there is a great deal to see and do in La Rochelle we have several sections about the highlights of the town (see below).

There is a small beach in the town - just along the harbour from the Lantern Tower. The beach is attractive at high tide although not very impressive at low tide when large stretches of slippery rock must be crossed to reach the sea. Most people head to Ile-de-Ré for better beaches.

Beaches

  • St. Palais

    Stunning Seaside Town

To the north of Royan, toward the pointe de la Coubre, the seaside station of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer offers several pleasant coves between dunes and pine forests. The various sand beaches of Saint-palais-sur-Mer offer facilities for everybody and numerous activities are possible (sailboats, surfing, kayak...).

From the downtown beach (plage du bureau), at the small and discrete cove where the large sand beach stretches along several kilometers toward La Palmyre, vacationers can always find a place to lay their towels. On certain beaches, one can also find children's clubs. On the south side, you can rapidly rejoin the beaches of Vaux sur Mer from the sentier des Douaniers. The coves become smaller and momre pristine.

  • La Palmyre

    Green Countryside and Gorgeous Beaches

South of the peninsula of Arvert, La Palmyre is the seaside district of the Mathes. Located 20 km from Royan, it offers a very green environment in the heart of the Courbe forest in the departement of Charente Maritime. It is mainly known fir its zoo that its one of the most important in France. Recent resort, there are no remarkable villas like we can find in Royan.

Several beaches at La Palmyre. That of Coubre is the beach the most to the north. It is shared with the commune of La Tremblade. Totally west oriented, it is reputated like a good place for surfing (but swimming is very dangerous). Near the city center, that of Bonne Anse is protected by a sandy arrow. South, the beaches of la Grande Côte is divided in several areas and are shared with the commune of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer.

  • Island of Oleron

    Picturesque Island with Perfect Swimming

The very long West coast beach runs almost all the way from North to South. Thus, from Saint-Trojan-les-Bains to Vert-Bois, the beaches of Grande plage, Giraudière, Allassins and Vert-Bois are connected. With fine white sand, small dunes and waves when the tide is rising, these immense beaches are perfect for water sports and sliding sports or for a relaxing session of "farniente ". If you want to be on your own, walk for a few minutes to find peace and quiet.

Local Countryside

  • Rivers

    Relax on the Water

Why not take a boat out on one of the many local rivers. They are perfect for kayaks and pedalos, and provide a great way to view the local countryside and farmland from the water.

Boats can be hired from nearby Saintes, and from there, you can relax with the family and take in some of the breathtaking scenery that this part of France has to offer.

  • Sunflowers

    Fields of Yellow Surround Mirabelle

In the summer months, the nearby landscape is dominated by great fields of sunflowers. The views are quite incredible, and by using some of the bikes that are freely available from Mirabelle, you can cycle along quiet country lanes exploring the nstriking beauty of these golden fields.

The local roads are very quiet and free from traffic, so are perfect for a whole-family cycle ride. Why not try cycling the scenic route to St. Jean D'Angeley? Or, if you're feeling more adventurous, you could cycle to nearby Saintes and spend the day in this beautiful historic town.

  • Rural Farmland

    Beautifully Rustic French Agriculture

As well as the sunflowers, the local area is home to many areas of agricultural farming. There are several vineyards, producing grapes for the nearby Cognac distillery, and there is plenty of opportunity for a local wine-tasting session.

You can also find cattle and horses on the nearby fields, and bails of hay stacked high by the farmers. THe rural landscape is a pleasure to behold, and best of all, it's right on our doorsetep.
